Could you be the monster to save who you love?

Two women, separated by generations, must leave what they know to start a new life. Seventeen-year-old Kate's senior year is ruined when she's moved from the only home she's ever known. After an isolating month alone in her apartment, school starts, but neither her classmates nor her teacher are who they seem. Kali, a single mother living in the nineteenth century wilds of Montana, is stalked by a malicious past. She fights to keep her daughter safe while her freedom is threatened by her less than benevolent benefactor. Both find love, and with it hope, but that is quickly ripped away as one woman must learn the lessons of the other -- before it's too late to save either.

Is that him? Is he back?

My legs jerked, kicking and twitching me around to face the sound. I managed to roll slightly, knocking against a soft, solid object at my feet. It grunted weakly, and immediately I recoiled as though I had been bitten. Squinting, I stared, willing my eyes to find light in the dark, but there was nothing.

The sound of the runner drew closer, as if they would trample me any moment. A dim, swaying light appeared through the trees, burning away the inky edges of the deep shadows. When light and sound were almost upon me, branches above me snapped, spraying me in a shower of dried pine needles and snow.

Summary
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THE MONSTERS IN A BOOK BECAME REAL?
When twelve-year old Eliza Winter finds a secret room in her missing grandfather’s sprawling, Gothic house, her safe, sheltered life is blown apart. Inside, below a stained glass window where moonlight shines no matter the time of day, sits The Book of Kindly Deaths.
In defiance of her controlling mother, who has always forbidden her to read anything strange or imaginary, Eliza takes the book. As night sets in, Eliza reads one haunting story after another. And the further she journeys inside the book, the more the boundaries between our world and a shadowy land of monsters and forbidden places begin to blur.
When the strange, crooked man from the book arrives on the doorstep claiming to be a rare book collector and demanding entry into the house, Eliza’s world is turned upside down. To escape him she must dive all the way into the spine-tingling world of The Book of Kindly Deaths to save her grandfather—and write an end to the nightmare she's caught inside.

From Eldritch's blog --
The Curious Origins of Eldritch Black
I was born in the dark and twisted streets of London, England and raised by a pack of vampiric wolves until I passed into the care of a ghostly family of former ventriloquists. The least said about that time, the better.
Upon being ejected from school like a cork from a bottle of Port, I left the family home and found a career investigating the strange and unusual. Sometimes I was paid, but mostly not. Still, my work inspired me to write tales of ghastly things and daring adventures for readers both young and old alike.
During my journey into the world of writing, I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance, and later representation, of the all-roundsupercalifragilisticexpialidocious literary Agent Savant Laurie McLean.
Since that happy meeting, my intrepid agent sold my debut novel “The Book of Kindly Deaths” which is set to be published by Spencer Hill Press in June 2014.

Excerpt
Moving lightning fast, Dez shifted and I was suddenly underneath him. His arms were on either side of my head, caging me in. Our bodies didn’t touch, but I felt him to the tips of my toes anyway.

The teasing grin disappeared when I dragged in a deep breath and my chest brushed his. Everything changed in an instant. The playful mood faded, replaced by primal heaviness. Our gazes collided and locked. Neither of us moved. His closeness sent a series of shivers skittering across my skin and made it hard to take slow, even breaths. My body tensed when his gaze dropped to my mouth.

He tilted his head to the side. “I… I honestly have no idea what we were talking about.”

                “Good. Neither do I.”

He shifted his weight onto one arm, bring him closer. “Have you enjoyed your trip so far?”

“Yes.” I felt as if I couldn’t get enough air into my lungs.

“Good.” He lowered his head. His breath was minty as it moved across my cheek and then my lips. “I’m glad.”

I wasn’t really following the conversation and I wasn’t sure that he was fully aware of what was coming out of his mouth. I searched my hazy brain for something to say and wet my lips. I-

The sound that came out of Dez’s chest rumbled through me. A stuttered heartbeat passed and then his lips were on mine. There was nothing slow about this kiss. It scorched my skin and caused my body to stretch tight like a bowstring. The kiss deepened, spinning my senses. I shuddered when his hand curved over my shoulder and drifted down to my waist, his long fingers spreading out under the hem of my shirt, grazing the bare skin of my stomach.

I gasped, floored by the raw sensations pounding through my blood. My skin felt as if I was about to phase. Maybe I was.

“Jasmine,” he whispered, the word falling against my lips, and then his body was pressing mine into the mattress, heavy, sweet and hard.

Summary
Alex and Becca have always been best friends. But when Becca does something nearly unforgivable at Alex’s dad’s funeral, Alex cuts ties with her and focuses on her grieving family.

Time passes, and Alex finally decides to forgive Becca. Then she’s hit with another shocker: Becca has cancer. It also turns out Becca has a bucket list, one she doesn’t know she’ll be able to finish now. That’s where Alex comes in, along with a mysterious and guarded boy who just may help Alex check a few items off her own bucket list.

Julie Halpern writes about illness, loss, love, and friendship with candor and compassion. Here is an unforgettable book about living fully, living authentically, and just . . . living.
Thoughts
The F-It List wasn't 100% exactly what I was expecting. With a title like The F-It List, you'd think I wouldn't be surprised by what was written. I am still a bit naive sometimes.

Overall, this was a good read. The second half, to me, was loads better than the first. I think it took my brain that long to adjust to language and sex. I'm out of touch with the teens, I reckon!

Our story revolved around our main character, Alex. Alex was grieving her dad (really, not grieving), her best friend's betrayal, her best friend's illness, and the boy she liked (but thought she didn't deserve the happiness).

After the girls spent the summer apart, they did reconcile. They've been best friends since elementary school! Her best friend, Becca, wanted to live vicariously through Alex with her bucket list while she was going through chemo. The chats and banter that these girls had, I enjoyed. They were raunchy sometimes, yet funny.

Leo is the distraction that Alex didn't plan on. She had noticed him and kind of crushed on him for a while, and then WHAM! They bumped into each other and they went with the flow. I actually really liked their relationship. Instead of clingy, lovey-dovey teenagers, they did teenager-y things; they watched movies, had a mutual love/hobby, and made-out.

Alex couldn't deal with being happy when others were miserable. She thought she had to be miserable as well. Essentially, this book was about Alex figuring out that it's okay to be happy and have good things happen even if others are having a rough go at life. She couldn't control her dad's death or her best friend's cancer and it took the whole book for her to get to the acceptance of that.
