CJ Lyons: YALLFest Interview

The author interviews continue!

So, if y'all don't know about this amazing festival yet, please get on board. I have gone for the past 2 years (as long as it's been in existence) and it is the most fun I have in a day! The growth from the 1st year to the 2nd was phenomenal! I can only imagine what this 3rd year will be.

Today's interview is with CJ Lyons!

Describe your book in 5 words:
CJ: Girl dying of broken heart (literally)

What is the hardest line to write- the first or the last?
CJ: The first. I’ll often return to it over and over again until I've sliced and diced and fine-honed it to that perfect combination of intrigue, visceral reaction, and emotional connection with the reader.

What one young adult novel do you wish you had when you were a teen? Why?
CJ: Code Name Verity because it is so emotionally honest and inspiring, empowering, not to mention gut-wrenching. Really brings the era to life as well as the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.

Tell us 5 random facts about yourself.
CJ: When I was a kid I worked summer stock theatre and was actually a theatre major undergrad before switching to pre-med. I've had two hard landings in helicopters while working as a flight doc. I survived rampaging Cape Horn Buffalo and a pack of wild baboons, not to mention a leopard (he’s already eaten) while hiking in Hells Gate Park in Kenya. I’m a Capricorn. I diagnosed my niece with the heart condition that’s at the center of my YA thriller, BROKEN.

What are you working on now?
CJ: DAMAGED, my next YA thriller, due out in 2014. It deals with the really tough topic of abuse and coercion and is the most difficult book I've ever tackled—there have been times while writing when I was literally in tears as I typed.

What is your favorite genre to write in? To Read?
CJ: I created my own genre of Thrillers with Heart—I love writing fast paced stories with raising stakes but centered on the emotional heart of an evolving relationship. As for reading, I read almost every genre but especially love YA, magical realism, and thrillers. As long as a story grabs me by the throat and won’t let me go because I’m too worried about what the characters are going through, I’ll read it and love it.

Breaking the Reins: Review & Giveaway

Breaking the Reins by Juliana Haygert
Publication date: August 14th 2013
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:

Horses, mansions, tea parties, and lies are twenty-year-old Hannah Taylor’s life. To others, her family and her relationship with Eric is perfect. But she knows the truth. She lives it.
After a fire takes her grandma’s life and kills her horse, Hannah’s immaculate life spirals out of control. Her father disapproves of her decision to run her grandma’s ranch instead of focusing solely on learning the family business; Animal Control brings her Argus, a mistreated horse that she can’t turn away even though she’s not ready for another horse; and her boyfriend, Eric Bennett, a world famous polo player, becomes possessive and authoritarian. Despite her best efforts to disguise it, Hannah grows wary of him.
Then, Leonardo Fernandes struts onto the polo scene. A cocky rookie with a messy life of his own, he’s drawn to Hannah and isn’t afraid of showing it, even when Eric makes it clear she is his and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep it that way. Hannah suffers for Eric’s jealousy. The abuse only gets worse when Leo steals the title of best polo player in the world from Eric.
But the title isn’t enough for Leo. He wants Hannah too, and she can’t deny her attraction to him either. Somehow, she must find a way to break free from abusive Eric before he breaks every bone in her body.

Thoughts:
First off, I'm not really in to the whole NA genre yet. When I read this synopsis, I thought this would be a good one to read and do a review.

I have to say, I did like this book. The characters seemed to be well thought out and written well. I'm a fan of Leo's!

I like the connection of being broken and needing someone to fix you and the relation of Argus with the same needs. The Hannah-Argus-Leo connection was excellent!

I like that Juliana incorporated some Portuguese sayings in the story. They really helped authenticate Leo and his family. Did I mention that I am a fan of Leo's? :)

The jerky, psychopath character, Eric was well written. He scared me, even in pages of a book. The abuse described in this book was quite scary. Sadly, I'm sure it's typical in abusive relationships. I approve of Hannah's mother getting involved in the non-profit group after everything was brought to light. Thumbs up, Juliana!

A review copy was provided. All thoughts are my own and I have not been persuaded in any way.
Rating:
I liked it! I liked the broken characters needing healing and love to get better. Argus is my hero!

About the Author:
